July 30, 2018
Greetings and welcome to the Federal Hocking HS/MS web page. Here you should find the forms, calendar dates, faculty email, and other important information you will need for the 2018-19 school year. Currently, the faculty and staff are working hard to get ready for the upcoming year. We hope you are as excited as we are to get started.
We take great pride in what we’ve established at Federal Hocking. We continue to be a progressive school where our staff not only works hard to prepare our students, both academically and civically, for life after secondary school, but also to provide a safe, flexible, child-centered learning environment where young people flourish. Our block schedule, advisory program, and performance-based assessments are integral to implementing this philosophy. If you’d like to learn more, please check the district web page. There, under the ‘Quick Links’ tab, scroll down to view our Operating Principles. These principles were the result of a collaborative effort between the entire faculty and staff of our district. They are important in that they guide us in all the decisions we make about our school and our students.
The start of the new year also brings many changes. The biggest change, based on recommendations from both a collaborative (staff, students, parents, and teachers) committee and the Superintendent, school will begin at 8:00 A.M. and end at 3:00 P.M. In addition, all bus routes have been reduced to an hour or less. Both of these new implementations mean students should be more rested and ready to meet their academic goals.
We also have three new teachers joining us this year. Mrs. Emma Wright will be teaching American Studies 9 and a high school elective. She most recently taught at Fairfield Union High school and will be taking over for Mr. Al Green who retired this past spring. Ms. Natalie O’Dell, a Warren High School and Muskingum College graduate, will be teaching high school intervention and Ms. Caricia Scheef, an OU graduate, will be teaching both high school and middle school math. Suffice to say we are excited to have these fine teachers join the Lancer family.
We also have made some improvements to our building and grounds including a brand new roof for the middle school (the high school roof was replaced a two years ago). We are also excited that construction on the new field house should be completed and ready for use this upcoming football season. Inside, we are in the process of updating and installing classroom projectors and that project should be completed sometime this fall, if not sooner. We have also added another cart of chromebooks for the middle school in addition to our one-to-one program for students in grades 9-12. Finally, updates to our Infinite Campus software should allow for simpler and better communication between teachers, coaches, and parents in addition to the ability to view and keep up with your child’s grades. Look for more information about that prior to the start of the year.
I’d also like to remind you of our Lancer Care Clinic located in back of the middle school in the old 6th grade wing. Their hours are from 7:45 AM to 3:30 PM and they not only serve our students district-wide but also the community. This year the clinic will be dispensing our student medication as well as continuing to treat those students that aren’t feeling well. They can also take care of physicals for athletes as well as required immunizations for all students.
In short, I am truly excited about the start of the new school year and look forward to working with you and your children.
Principal, Federal Hocking HS/MS
