Pennies for Patients Project

It all adds up!  Amesville Elementary students helped to raise $588.30 for our Pennies for Patients project to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Some students made and sold truffles and many borrowed from their piggy banks, did a few extra chores, and brought in spare change to help us surpass our goal of $400.  Thank you to our students, staff, and school community for supporting this service-learning experience.

It's Maple Sap Time!

Students in Mrs. Sechkar's/Ms. Marcia's Kindergarten learned all about tapping trees for maple sap and the process for making maple syrup. John Wood (of Homecoming Farms in Amesville) recently demonstrated how this process works and students got to try sap as it came straight from a local maple tree.

Eric Carle Author Study

Children's Author and Illustrator, Eric Carle, was the focus of a recent author study in Mrs. Sechkar's Kindergarten class.  Students read many of his books, graphed their favorite stories and characters, and created their own stories and illustrations inspired by Eric Carle.  Stories were shared with third grade buddies from Mrs. Gilmore's class.

On Friday, November 6th, Amesville welcomed Federal Hocking graduate and award-winning author Stacie Vaughn Hutton.  Mrs. Hutton shared her story called Shovelful of Sunshine with students.  Mr. John Young, FH school board member, helped in reading the part of the father in the story.  Students enjoyed seeing coalmining artifacts like a canary cage, lunch pail, picks and shovels, hats, and coalmining clothing. Everyone also enjoyed hearing the wonderful harmonica music by Mr. Young.   A big THANK YOU to teacher, Mrs. Tracy Keirns, for organizing this great event and to Mrs. Hutton and Mr. Young for bringing the story alive to the students.  It's what real writing is all about and our students are authors too!

Farm Day

Amesville students in Pre-K-3rd Grade enjoyed Farm Day on October 9th.  About 220 students and 80 volunteers joined to celebrate fall and the farm.  Mother Nature cooperated and the rain held off until we were just loading the busses!  Activities included fishing, leaf printing, facepainting, seed saving, roasting marshmallows and popping popcorn, saddles on haybales, walnut cracking, a farm obstacle course, and many other fun things!  A BIG THANK YOU to retired teachers Barb Hays (and her husband Steve) for hosting the event at their farm and Marcia Burchby for all her time in gathering items and helping to organize activities.  We could not have this event without all our family helpers so thank you for spending the morning with us!  IT WAS GREAT FUN!  And...check out more photographs of the event on the Federal Hocking Facebook page.
