District Committee Recommends Changes for 2018-19 School Year

A district committee comprised of parents, teachers, students, administrators, and staff met in order to look at the use of time in the Federal Hocking School District.  Specifically, the committee reviewed the current research regarding the appropriate start and end times for students of different ages as well as the benefits/challenges in providing building-wide planning time for teachers.   Each meeting lasted between 1 ½ and 2 hours and each was filled with rich discussion around the current studies and how they coincide with personal experiences.  Ultimately, the group was able to put together a list of recommendations for the Superintendent for the 2018-2019 school year.   They are as follows:

  1. Amesville and Coolville Elementary would start at 8:30 AM and end at 3:00 PM.
  2. FHHS/MS would start at 9:30 AM and end at 4:00 PM.
  3. Allow for 30 minutes of collaboration time each day for both the elementary school and the HS/MS teachers.  This time should be strategic and scheduled collaboratively between teachers and principals.
  4. This plan should be shared with parents, teachers, and community in order to gain feedback for a smooth transition for the 2018-2019 school year.
