Scholarships & Financial Aid

Local scholarship (Unified Arts, SAM, Irene Flowers, etc.) applications will be available beginning in January.

Please check the Class of 2024 Google Classroom page for currently available scholarships.

Also, be sure to check the financial aid/scholarship page of the university or college that you would like to attend, AND be sure to fill out the FAFSA when it opens in December.

The Ohio Township Association Scholarship Program

The 2024 OTA Scholarship applications are now open! This year, they will award five high school seniors $1,500 each for their future education. Opportunities to apply for all OTA scholarships, including the Local Government Achievement Scholarship, the Academic Achievement Scholarship, and the Trade School Scholarship, are open now through January 31, 2024.
Applicants must be high school seniors, reside in an Ohio township and plan to attend a college, university, or trade/vocational school in Ohio. Click on the link for more information and to apply!

Ohio Credit Union League Scholarship

The Ohio Credit Union Foundation is offering Ohio undergraduate credit union members the opportunity to apply for one of three scholarships ($5,000, $2,500 & $1,000) by creating an interactive 1 to 2½-minute video answering the following scholarship question:

The Ohio State University Alumni Scholars Program

Global Lift Equipment Scholarship

To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must:

  • Be currently attending or planning on attending a post-secondary institution in the US no later than fall

  • Submit a short story. Detailed instructions can be found on the application page

  • 1 award of $500

  • Deadline: April 15, 2024

Fairfield County Foundation Scholarships

The Fairfield County Foundation holds over 130 scholarship funds for the benefit of area students. Over 90 of these funds are administered using the Foundations online system and the majority can be applied to by using the universal application. Since 2010, we have provided 3,863 scholarship opportunities and awarded more than $7.2 million in scholarship funds!

The link to apply and detailed information on applying can be found on the FAQ page. The Fairfield County Foundation scholarship online application for the 2023-2024 school year will open December 1, 2023. The scholarship application will close at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2024.

Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development (COAD

  • Deadline: May 1st

  • Demonstrate financial need

  • Reside in one of the 30 county service areas

  • Applications are available outside of Mrs. Wright's office as well as online.

Union Plus Scholarship

  • Scholarships for a family of union members.

  • The applicant must be an undergraduate or graduate who is or whose parent, legal guardian or financially responsible grandparent is a current or retired member of a union and participates in a Union Plus program. Application, eligibility requirements, and mailing directions are available on the website.

  • Deadline: January 31; noon (online). Award value: $500.00 to $4000.00. May re-apply.

Samsung American Legion Scholarship

  • Scholarships for high school juniors who attend the current session of either The American Legion Boys State or Auxiliary Girls State program and are a direct descendant or a legally adopted child of a wartime veteran who served on active duty during at least one of the periods of war officially designated as eligibility dates for American Legion membership. 

  • Scholarship is for undergraduate study only and may be used for tuition, books, fees, and room and board.

  • Applications may be downloaded from website; scholarship recipients may re-apply for the award.

  • Deadline: Applications are submitted to program staff upon arrival to Boys State or Girls State in June.

Profiles in Courage Essay Contest

  • Students in grades 9 through 12 may write an original essay of up to 1,000 words demonstrating their understanding of political courage.

  • Essay must include five references.

  • Registration and information is available on the website.

  • Deadline: January. Award values: $500.00, $1000.00, or $10000.00

The Craig Copeland Community Service and Involvement Scholarship

  • Developed by the Athens AM Rotary Club as a memorial to Craig Copeland, a founding member of the club.

  • Craig Copeland Community Service and Involvement Scholar is:

    • and advocate for others by promoting fairness and kindness

    • tolerant and accepting of diversity

    • committed to building strong relationships through honesty and integrity

    • dedicated to improving their community through service and involvement

  • Total: $500 per student

  • Deadline: March 17

  • Applications are available outside of Mrs. Wright's office.

     

Harry B. Crewson Freshman Scholarship

  • Scholarships available to graduating high school seniors who are members or children of members of the Ohio University Credit Union, have demonstrated excellence in community activities and/or talent areas in addition to academic achievement in high school and will be attending Ohio University.

  • Applications and more information available on website

  • Deadline: March (received). Award value: $3000.00

OUCU Higher Education Scholarship

  • Scholarships available to graduating high school seniors who are members or children of members of the Ohio University Credit Union, have demonstrated excellence in community activities and/or talent areas in addition to academic achievement in high school and will be attending an institution of higher education other than Ohio University.

  • Three $3000 scholarships will be awarded

  • Applications available outside of Mrs. Wright's office and on the Class of 2023 page

  • Deadline: April 1st

Foundation for Appalachian Ohio Scholarships

FAO is honored to support over 230 donor-established scholarship funds in sustaining the continued educational pursuits of the region’s students. These scholarships are made possible through FAO’s generous donors and we take pride in honoring the legacy and story behind each fund.

Online application opens February 15th. Paper applications are available outside of Mrs. Wright's office.

David V. Stivison Appalachian Scholarship Fund

  • A need-based scholarship to residents of Athens and neighboring counties applying for college entry.

  • Applicants must have a household income at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines.

  • Deadline: May 1 (postmark). Award value varies. Need-based

  • Paper applications are available outside of Mrs. Wright's office

American Veterans (AMVETS) Scholarship

  • Local scholarships for Ohio high school seniors are available from Post 53 (Chauncey), Post 76 (Athens), Post 93 (Albany), and their Ladies Auxiliaries.  Applicants must be children or grandchildren of US military families.

  • Deadline: Third Monday in June

  • Paper applications available outside of Mrs. Wright's office

The American Legion Legacy Scholarship

  • Scholarships for children of active duty military, Guard, or Reserve who were federalized and died on active duty after September 11, 2001. The applicant must be a high school senior or high school graduate. The scholarship is for undergraduate study at an accredited institution of higher education within the United States. Applications may be downloaded from the website; scholarship recipients may re-apply for the award.

  • Deadline: April 1st

AFSCME Family Scholarship

  • Ten scholarships for families of AFSCME members. The applicant must be a graduating high school senior whose parent, legal guardian or financially responsible grandparent is a full dues-paying AFSCME member. Application, eligibility requirements, and mailing directions are available on the website.

  • Deadline: December 31

AAHD Frederick J. Krause Scholarship on Health and Disability

  • This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student with a disability who is pursuing undergraduate/ graduate studies in an accredited university. Preference is given to students majoring in a field related to disability and health.

Targeting Excellence Scholarship

Targeting Excellence scholarships will be awarded by a scholarship committee comprised of the national board of directors and regional leaders involved in food animal production. Scholarships will reflect the interest of annual contributors and the participants of the fund-raising events. Scholarships will be awarded to both undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in an agricultural curriculum at an institution that offers degrees in agriculture. Preference will always be given to applicants with a desire to work in some aspect of food animal production.

  • Applications open February 1st and close February 28th

The Horatio Alger Scholarship

  • Students in the graduating class of 2023 and 2024, who are committed to a 4-year degree, are in critical financial need, and are involved in co-curricular and community activities, are encouraged to apply.

  • Students must maintain a GPA of 2.0.

  • Applications are available online.

  • Application deadline: March 15th

  • Scholarships range from $5,000 to $20,000.

Free Speech Essay Contest

  • High school juniors and seniors for the current school year are eligible to participate.

  • Students must submit an essay between 800-1000 words on the topic.

  • $10,000 first prize, $5,000 second prize, 3- $1,000 runner-up prizes

  • Contest reopens in 2023

Distinguished Young Women National Scholarship

  • Is open to senior girls

  • who are a U.S. Citizen, and a legal resident of Ohio.

  • Applications are available at the link above

College Scholarship Program

  • This scholarship rewards excellence by supporting high-achieving high school seniors with financial need

  • who seek to attend the nation's best four-year colleges and universities.
